Final Blog/ Reflection

I was inspired to create this project because as I graduate Highschool and start to study nursing in college, I wanted some experience in the medical field. This was a great way to look at emergency response, as well as in patient and out patient medicine. I believe this project went very well for me because it showed me a lot about my interests. It was so neat to be in the hospital setting, as well as on the fire truck and ambulance. Through this project, I was able to learn more about myself and my passions. I learned on my project that my reality is very different than others. If possible, Hawken School should encourage others to explore fields that they will be pursuing later in life because it can draw in more passion. I am not sure if Hawken would be able to do anything with a service day with my mentors because of the hospital setting and limited space. When giving advice to rising juniors/senior, I would recommend that they find something they ...

For my final day of shadowing experience, I shadowed Mrs. Shea, and OBGYN nurse. During this experience, I got to see both a C-Section as well as a Vaginal Birth. Both of these experiences were very cool to watch. During the C-Section, I got to be in the OR and watch the whole procedure take place. I observed with everyone did in the room, and payed very close attention to the nurses. Once thing that stood out to me was how sterile everything had to be in the room, including bright lights for the surgery that had plastic sterile covers over them, and a completely sterile table. After observing the C-section, I knew that me going into nursing was the right decision. The way the nurses interacted with the patient, the baby when it was born just wanted to make me already be a nurse. After the C-Section, Mrs. Shea took me on a tour of Post Partum and the NICU. After taking more and more steps around the hospital, I knew that I loved the environment. Walking around the NICU, we ran in...

On my last day of project at the fire station, it was a special day because it was memorial day. When I got down to the station, we made a great big breakfast together with eggs, hashbrowns, biscuits, and gravy. IT WAS SO GOOD. One really big takeaway I learned from this portion of my project was how important cooking is in the fire station, Everybody pitches in to help in some capacity. Additionally, I was located at station 2 in Euclid. There are 3 stations in total in Euclid, and since it was memorial day, we all traveled to station 1 to say hello to others. After that, we went on various calls. It was also very hot outside, so everyone was pouring sweat while running around, including me. A very memorable experience I will keep with me was when I tried on all the gear. There are so many layers to the equipment to make it withstand fire, but it also makes it extremely heavy. Once I had all the gear on, Mr. Shea helped to put me on an oxygen tank so I could see what it felt lik...

Each day at the fire station is completely different, and I have also seen a lot of different realities. Yesterday, we started the day off with a few calls, and then made our way to Lincoln Electric. At Lincoln Electric, we did a facility fire inspection. We walked around the plant for around an hour, and we didn't even through half of it. It is a huge building that consists of many different aspects. I learned that it is important for fire departments to walk through building like these because of all the layers of safety that go into them. It was also a really cool experience because I got to go on the roof of the building, and you could not even see the end of the building from where we were because it was so big. After Lincoln, we went on a few more calls, returned to the station for a quick lunch, and then went to the store to pick up groceries for dinner. We ended up going to the store twice because the first time we were there dispatch contacted us and we had to go out on an...

For my 4th blog post, I am gonna talk about more of my experiences at UH with Dr. Ben Boswell and the medical field. As I have now gone in with Dr. Boswell multiple times, I have learned the ever changing mindset that takes place in the medical field. As I begin to explore more about nursing, it is essential to keep in mind that the patient takes priority, while still caring for yourself. Dr. Boswell is very busy, with an overbooked schedule in the morning and the afternoon. Dr. Boswell cares for each of his patients the best he can, and he does an amazing job. He has shown me what it means to care for a patient no matter what, even when they think they are the only patient he has ever had. Dr. Boswell does his best to keep on schedule, but often falls behind because he is spending extra time with patients to care for them, do minor procedures that were not scheduled, or explain more in depth, or even because patients forget about their appointments and show up 1-2 hours late. But thro...

For another portion of my project, I shadowed alongside Dr. Ben Boswell at University Hospital with his sports medicine clinic. Unfortunately, I will not be able to include any photos or videos in this post because I was in a medical office and asked not to take any because of HIPPA violations and medical protocols. Though this experience was connected to the medical field, it was completely different than my experience at the Euclid Fire Department. I was able watch medical procedures, sit in on patient office visits, and discuss with the doctors in between about what I had watched or heard. It was very cool to be in the medical office setting and see what goes on behind the scenes. I have always been eager to learn how doctors diagnose and treat patients. During my time at the clinic, I saw various injections to the knee, hip, and elbow. These injections were either steroid injections, or gel injections. Dr. Boswell explained the difference between the two, and why a patient might ne...

For my first day of project, I shadowed the Euclid Fire Station. I arrived at the station at 8:30am, had breakfast with the crew, and left at 8:30pm after going on various calls throughout the day. To say the least, this experience was eye opening to me. Its not very often that one can say that they have rode on a firetruck or ambulance, let alone while on the way to a call. Before 8:30am on my first day, I believed that firefighters and paramedics were there to save the day during fatal 911 calls. Truly, it is much more than that. During my first day, I went on a around 10 calls. I rode in the back of the firetruck on the first call to an apartment building that had a gas leak in one of the laundry rooms. When we arrived on scene at that call, we went to the location, and sure enough smelled gas. One of the crew on scene used a tool to locate exactly where the gas was leaking, and then turned it off. On our way back to the station from that call, we saw a car stopped in the middle of ...
