Each day at the fire station is completely different, and I have also seen a lot of different realities. Yesterday, we started the day off with a few calls, and then made our way to Lincoln Electric. At Lincoln Electric, we did a facility fire inspection. We walked around the plant for around an hour, and we didn't even through half of it. It is a huge building that consists of many different aspects. I learned that it is important for fire departments to walk through building like these because of all the layers of safety that go into them. It was also a really cool experience because I got to go on the roof of the building, and you could not even see the end of the building from where we were because it was so big. After Lincoln, we went on a few more calls, returned to the station for a quick lunch, and then went to the store to pick up groceries for dinner. We ended up going to the store twice because the first time we were there dispatch contacted us and we had to go out on another call! A really fun part of the day for me was flushing the fire hydrants because I got to help with that a lot. The first one I tried helping with took a minute to figure out, but I shortly understood the steps to do it after a few. We drove up and down Euclid Ave flushing out the hydrants. To say the least, my arms got pretty tired after the first few. After seeing the many things that firefighters have to do that you don't really think about, you become a lot more appreciative. My legs and arms were tired by the end of the day, but I really enjoyed being out in the community helping those in need. All of the people at the station are kind hearted, and I hope one day when I take this experience and transfer it into nursing, I can be as caring as they are.
