Each day at the fire station is completely different, and I have also seen a lot of different realities. Yesterday, we started the day off with a few calls, and then made our way to Lincoln Electric. At Lincoln Electric, we did a facility fire inspection. We walked around the plant for around an hour, and we didn't even through half of it. It is a huge building that consists of many different aspects. I learned that it is important for fire departments to walk through building like these because of all the layers of safety that go into them. It was also a really cool experience because I got to go on the roof of the building, and you could not even see the end of the building from where we were because it was so big. After Lincoln, we went on a few more calls, returned to the station for a quick lunch, and then went to the store to pick up groceries for dinner. For my 4th blog post, I am gonna talk about more of my experiences at UH with Dr. Ben Boswell and the medical field. As I have now gone in with Dr. Boswell multiple times, I have learned the ever changing mindset that takes place in the medical field. As I begin to explore more about nursing, it is essential to keep in mind that the patient takes priority, while still caring for yourself. Dr. Boswell is very busy, with an overbooked schedule in the morning and the afternoon. Dr. Boswell cares for each of his patients the best he can, and he does an amazing job. He has shown me what it means to care for a patient no matter what, even when they think they are the only patient he has ever had. Dr. Boswell does his best to keep on schedule, but often falls behind because he is spending extra time with patients to care for them, do minor procedures that were not scheduled, or explain more in depth, or even because patients forget about their appointments and show up 1-2 hours late. For another portion of my project, I shadowed alongside Dr. Ben Boswell at University Hospital with his sports medicine clinic. Unfortunately, I will not be able to include any photos or videos in this post because I was in a medical office and asked not to take any because of HIPPA violations and medical protocols. Though this experience was connected to the medical field, it was completely different than my experience at the Euclid Fire Department. I was able watch medical procedures, sit in on patient office visits, and discuss with the doctors in between about what I had watched or heard. It was very cool to be in the medical office setting and see what goes on behind the scenes. I have always been eager to learn how doctors diagnose and treat patients. During my time at the clinic, I saw various injections to the knee, hip, and elbow. These injections were either steroid injections, or gel injections. For my first day of project, I shadowed the Euclid Fire Station. I arrived at the station at 8:30am, had breakfast with the crew, and left at 8:30pm after going on various calls throughout the day. To say the least, this experience was eye opening to me. Its not very often that one can say that they have rode on a firetruck or ambulance, let alone while on the way to a call. Before 8:30am on my first day, I believed that firefighters and paramedics were there to save the day during fatal 911 calls. Truly, it is much more than that. During my first day, I went on a around 10 calls. I rode in the back of the firetruck on the first call to an apartment building that had a gas leak in one of the laundry rooms. When we arrived on scene at that call, we went to the location, and sure enough smelled gas. One of the crew on scene used a tool to locate exactly where the gas was leaking, and then turned it off. I was inspired to create this project because of the career I will begin after college. For college, I will be studying nursing, and I believe this project will open my horizon and lead me to explore particular fields of medicine. I will partake in ride alongs at the fire station, observe the OBGYN nursing field, and even explore Sports medicine. I have always had a passion for medicine, and this experience will allow me to engage deeper and learn more. I will be spending time at the Euclid Fire Station, Cleveland Clinic, and a UH branch campus. I am very excited to engage with the community and learn more about medicine. This project may even lead me to find a specific more narrow passion within medicine. I cant wait!
