Blog Post 4

For my 4th blog post, I am gonna talk about more of my experiences at UH with Dr. Ben Boswell and the medical field. As I have now gone in with Dr. Boswell multiple times, I have learned the ever changing mindset that takes place in the medical field. As I begin to explore more about nursing, it is essential to keep in mind that the patient takes priority, while still caring for yourself. Dr. Boswell is very busy, with an overbooked schedule in the morning and the afternoon. Dr. Boswell cares for each of his patients the best he can, and he does an amazing job. He has shown me what it means to care for a patient no matter what, even when they think they are the only patient he has ever had. Dr. Boswell does his best to keep on schedule, but often falls behind because he is spending extra time with patients to care for them, do minor procedures that were not scheduled, or explain more in depth, or even because patients forget about their appointments and show up 1-2 hours late. But through all of this, he adapts and adjusts to what is happening. While I do not plan on becoming a doctor, I will take what he as taught me as I start caring for other patients.  Adapting and adjusting to a new environment, a troublesome patient, insignificant materials, ect. Additionally, while taking away this skill, I have also loved being in a medical office. I have met new people every time I go in, and seen new things each day. As I look into my future, I can see myself in this very environment. I only have one more day left with Dr. Boswell, but I look forward to it and the new things I will see and learn.

  For my final day of shadowing experience, I shadowed Mrs. Shea, and OBGYN nurse. During this experience, I got to see both a C-Section as well as a Vaginal Birth. Both of these experiences were very cool to watch. During the C-Section, I got to be in the OR and watch the whole procedure take place. I observed with everyone did in the room, and payed very close attention to the nurses. Once thing that stood out to me was how sterile everything had to be in the room, including bright lights for the surgery that had plastic sterile covers over them, and a completely sterile table. After observing the C-section, I knew that me going into nursing was the right decision. The way the nurses interacted with the patient, the baby when it was born just wanted to make me already be a nurse. After the C-Section, Mrs. Shea took me on a tour of Post Partum and the NICU. Each day at the fire station is completely different, and I have also seen a lot of different realities. Yesterday, we started the day off with a few calls, and then made our way to Lincoln Electric. At Lincoln Electric, we did a facility fire inspection. We walked around the plant for around an hour, and we didn't even through half of it. It is a huge building that consists of many different aspects. I learned that it is important for fire departments to walk through building like these because of all the layers of safety that go into them. It was also a really cool experience because I got to go on the roof of the building, and you could not even see the end of the building from where we were because it was so big. After Lincoln, we went on a few more calls, returned to the station for a quick lunch, and then went to the store to pick up groceries for dinner.   On my last day of project at the fire station, it was a special day because it was memorial day. When I got down to the station, we made a great big breakfast together with eggs, hashbrowns, biscuits, and gravy. IT WAS SO GOOD. One really big takeaway I learned from this portion of my project was how important cooking is in the fire station, Everybody pitches in to help in some capacity. Additionally, I was located at station 2 in Euclid. There are 3 stations in total in Euclid, and since it was memorial day, we all traveled to station 1 to say hello to others. After that, we went on various calls. It was also very hot outside, so everyone was pouring sweat while running around, including me. A very memorable experience I will keep with me was when I tried on all the gear. There are so many layers to the equipment to make it withstand fire, but it also makes it extremely heavy.
