On my last day of project at the fire station, it was a special day because it was memorial day. When I got down to the station, we made a great big breakfast together with eggs, hashbrowns, biscuits, and gravy. IT WAS SO GOOD. One really big takeaway I learned from this portion of my project was how important cooking is in the fire station, Everybody pitches in to help in some capacity. Additionally, I was located at station 2 in Euclid. There are 3 stations in total in Euclid, and since it was memorial day, we all traveled to station 1 to say hello to others. After that, we went on various calls. It was also very hot outside, so everyone was pouring sweat while running around, including me. A very memorable experience I will keep with me was when I tried on all the gear. There are so many layers to the equipment to make it withstand fire, but it also makes it extremely heavy. Once I had all the gear on, Mr. Shea helped to put me on an oxygen tank so I could see what it felt like. I was then in full gear with oxygen, and Mr. Shea told me I was going to do a drill, and I said ok. He walked away for a minute and then came back with a plastic bag to cover my vision, acting as smoke. Now I knew the task he gave me was going to be extremely hard to complete. He told me to get on my knees and grab the wall with my right hand and find the door, Immediately, I wanted to give up. The gear was heavy, I was already sweating, I was on oxygen, and I had no clue where the door I was looking for was. After a few minutes, I found the door and managed to get it open. I then searched the room I was in trying to find a "person" (which was just a box for the drill). It took me around 2 minutes to find. Being able to experience this drill hands on made me realize how truly difficult the job of a fireman is. It is one thing to go into a burning building looking to save people, but doing it in a building you are not familiar with and haver no sight with make its almost impossible to do-at least for me. This experience at the fire station made me so grateful for those that put their lives on the line every day to protect those in their community. It is truly incredible.
