For another portion of my project, I shadowed alongside Dr. Ben Boswell at University Hospital with his sports medicine clinic. Unfortunately, I will not be able to include any photos or videos in this post because I was in a medical office and asked not to take any because of HIPPA violations and medical protocols. Though this experience was connected to the medical field, it was completely different than my experience at the Euclid Fire Department. I was able watch medical procedures, sit in on patient office visits, and discuss with the doctors in between about what I had watched or heard. It was very cool to be in the medical office setting and see what goes on behind the scenes. I have always been eager to learn how doctors diagnose and treat patients. During my time at the clinic, I saw various injections to the knee, hip, and elbow. These injections were either steroid injections, or gel injections. Dr. Boswell explained the difference between the two, and why a patient might need one of the other. The procedure was neat to watch because of the various steps and advanced technology involved. Everything that I saw in the office followed protocol, and I think that was a major takeaway for me as I explore the medical field for a future career. Since I am working with Dr. Boswell, its going to be different than what I see when I get into the career of nursing, but I picture myself in a similar environment. Another thing that stuck out to me was that patient care is a priority. Dr. Boswell has a very packed schedule, much so that he missed lunch by an hour to take care of his patients. As I continue to shadow Dr. Boswell, I look forward to learning more about patient care, medical technology, and even sports medicine.
It's interesting that these careers utilize similar skillsets but in different settings and pacing. I'm curious if you are discovering you have preferences!
